Monsters is my first real venture into writing a first-person thriller. It started as an experiment, but I really liked what I saw at the beginning, and it developed into a full-fledged novel that I can't seem to stop writing.
The story follows protagonist Matt King as he treks through the country, living the life of a nomad in a world that's been overrun with formerly human monsters who hunt human beings as food. The grim, dark, twisted simplicity clashes with the civilized complexity of the past as Matt goes to any lengths necessary to survive. The harsh environment forces him to grapple with what it means to be human in a world full of savage cannibals that were once living, breathing people (and still may be, though the degree to which that may or may nor be true is still in question).
How much humanity can one lose and still be considered a person? How much is human life worth when all semblance of human society has been destroyed? And how far can someone go to survive before they become a monster themselves? By the end of the story, we will see if Matt can find satisfactory answers to these questions - or if he succumbs to the monsters both around and within.
And after that...who knows? Maybe if he survives, there'll be a sequel. I guess you'll have to read the story to find out.
Enjoy!
